Menus are collections of links that allow users to navigate your website. By default, your website uses a special menu called "Main Navigation" that is displayed in the navigation bar across your site. This menu appears horizontally across the top of the site on a gray bar underneath the red Iowa State University header.
You can also create additional menus to use as sub-navigation on various pages. You must first create the menu and then add it to each page. You add the menu block to a page in the same way you add any other block. The block is linked back to the menu, so any changes you make to the menu are automatically reflected on those pages.
Creating a Menu
To create a new menu, go to the Menus option on the Tools bar and then click Add Menu.
The Title (required) and Administrative Summary (optional) are never displayed to the user and are for your own bookkeeping purposes.
Click Save when finished.
Adding/Editing Menu Links
Empty menus aren't very useful, so you'll want to add links to the menu. Later, when you place the menu, keep in mind that each placement is tied back to the menu itself. Everyplace you use the menu, it will contain the same links. If you make a change to the menu, those changes take place everywhere that menu is used.
To add a new link, click Add Link and to modify an existing link click Edit from the Operations column.
Item Title – the text that the user will click on to go follow the link.
Item Link – the link they will go to. If you want to link to content on your site, for example a page, just start typing the name of the page and the search will display the results. It is best to use the search for material on your site, rather than copy/pasting the actual URL, as this will link to the behind-the-scenes node number for the page which should never change. You can also link to outside resources by using their full web address, e.g. https://example.com/howto/do/stuff.html
Menu Icons – these are icons that you can add before (prepend) and/or after (append) the name. You will want to use the Font Awesome Icons <i class="fas fa-external-link-alt"></i> class information in these fields. For example, if you want to add the external link icon (<i class="fas fa-external-link-alt"></i>) after the link, you would add fas fa-external-link-alt
to the Append Icon Class field.
Advanced Options – if you feel you need to use anything in the Advanced Options turn-down, get in touch with us and we can assist you.
Reordering and Indenting Links
When you add a new link to a menu, it is automatically added to the end of the current list of links. You can use the move icon () to reorder and indent links underneath other links. Indented links appear as drop-down items on the Main Navigation and as indented items on menu blocks.
Be sure to click Save after you've finished rearranging the links.
Adding a Menu to a Page
After you have created a menu, you can add it to any page as a Menu (Basic Block) or an Menu (Adventure Block).
